Guyana’s growth must remain people-centred – Min Griffith

Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning Keoma Griffith has emphasised that Guyana’s rapid economic growth must ultimately be measured by the benefits delivered to its people.

Speaking at the Local Content Summit 2026 at the Four Points by Sheraton on Wednesday, Minister Griffith noted that while Guyana has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, the country’s success should be reflected in the opportunities created for citizens.

“As remarkable as these developments are, the true measure of Guyana’s success will not be found solely in production figures, investment statistics or revenue streams. It will be found in the lives of our people,” he stated.

The minister said development must be driven by Guyanese talent, innovation, enterprise and aspirations, while ensuring that economic opportunities turn into lasting benefits for citizens.

“How do we ensure that Guyana’s development is driven by Guyanese talent, Guyanese innovation, Guyanese enterprise and Guyanese aspirations? These questions lie at the heart of local content,” he told participants.

Minister Griffith described the Local Content Act as more than just legislation.

He noted that it represents a national commitment to ensuring opportunities created through the country’s natural resources contribute directly to business development, workforce growth and economic inclusion.

“The objective of local content is not merely participation. It is value creation. It is about creating opportunities for Guyanese-owned businesses to enter supply chains, expand operations, access finance, develop expertise and compete successfully within a rapidly evolving economy.”

Minister Griffith highlighted the expansion of opportunities across sectors, including construction, transportation, logistics, manufacturing, hospitality, information technology, professional services, agriculture, retail and engineering.

According to the minister, sustainable development must be built on the strength of the country’s people, businesses and institutions rather than solely on natural resources.

He urged stakeholders to continue investing in Guyanese talent, strengthening local enterprises, supporting workforce development and fostering innovation to ensure prosperity reaches every region and community. [Department of Public Information]
