President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday reaffirmed Guyana’s sovereignty over the Essequibo region, declaring that the territory “is Guyana’s” as the country observed its 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations at Fort Island in Essequibo.
Addressing thousands gathered for the national flag-raising ceremony, the President said Guyana remains firm in its defence of the 1899 Arbitral Award and the ongoing judicial process before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the border controversy with Venezuela. “The Essequibo is Guyana’s. He described Essequibo as central to Guyana’s national heritage and said hosting the anniversary observance in the region carried significant meaning. The anniversary was celebrated under the theme “Homecoming.”
