Pres. Ali reiterates relocation plan for River View families

President Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday reiterated the proposal for the phased relocation of families living along the riverbank at River View, as the government seeks to create safer living conditions while ensuring residents can maintain their livelihoods.

The Head of State made the pitch during a community outreach drive under the Community Ride Initiative, which saw him cycling through Alexander Village, River View and Yarrow Dam and engaging residents on their concerns and development priorities.

During his interaction with families at River View, President Ali said the location of the homes along the riverbank presents challenges to further development.

He outlined the government’s willingness to assist residents with relocation.

“We want to help you. You cannot remain here if you are not prepared to move from this location. There is no way we can develop here because this is on the riverbank,” President Ali said.

He explained that the relocation would take place incrementally, with families receiving support through the government’s social housing programme.

President Ali also assured residents that the proposed relocation would take into account their livelihoods, particularly those who depend on fishing.

“Out here, we can build a small wharf and a shed so that all these fishermen can still come back, stay here and use the facility,” he said.

The president then sought residents’ agreement on the proposed approach, emphasising the need for collaboration as the government works to advance development in the area.

The engagement forms part of the government’s wider efforts to improve access to safe and suitable housing while ensuring development initiatives are responsive to the needs of communities.
