New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been added to the Desert Vipers squad for the upcoming ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League that is scheduled to take place in late July and early August in Guyana. He will replace Australia left-arm paceman Jason Behrendorff, who has had to drop out through injury.
Kyle, who is in the UK for a three-match Test series for the Black Caps against England, spoke to Vipers Voices about the season ahead and said he was really looking forward to the prospect of playing with the Vipers in Guyana, having heard many encouraging stories from compatriot and Vipers captain Lockie Ferguson.
“I have obviously heard (about the Desert Vipers) from (fellow New Zealand fast bowler) Lockie (Ferguson). Lockie has been there for a couple of years, and he just raves about the franchise and how good it is and his experience and his time with the group. So he has always spoken very highly (about the Desert Vipers). “It just seems like a really good organisation and team to be a part of. And I am looking forward to seeing it on the ground.”
Kyle described the opportunity to play for the Desert Vipers in the Global Super League as the “perfect storm” since he is likely to already be in Guyana for a five-match One-Day International series against the West Indies beforehand. “I had a message that there was an opportunity to link up with the Vipers for the GSL and I think we are in the West Indies as well for New Zealand. So (the GSL would be) straight afterwards. It is sort of a perfect storm and I cannot wait to be involved.

“I have not been to the Caribbean yet. And with the One-Day series for New Zealand before the GSL (Guyana Super League), it means I get a little bit of a taste of it there and then on to the GSL. So it will be cool and a different challenge, something very different. The GSL is a very short tournament, so that will provide some uniqueness as well. It is just a really cool opportunity.
“We have got our ODIs in Guyana so we will get a really good read of conditions through that series. I will obviously be talking to all the people that have been there before and played there and also locals. There is plenty of time between now and then to get a read on what it is going to be like but I am looking forward to it.”
The giant paceman said that, before the GSL, he was looking forward to is his latest assignment in the UK, returning to Test cricket with the Black Caps after a gap of two years because of injury. “I have been fortunate to have a couple of Test series here (in the UK) now. I was joking with someone a few weeks ago that if you are lucky enough to get one Lord’s Test in your career then you are pretty fortunate. I am hopefully about to walk into my third.
“It has obviously been a little period of time to work through some things, and that aligns now to take that plunge back into the Test arena. I am excited to be part of this UK tour, building up to some Test cricket.”
The Desert Vipers team include its captain, Chris Green (AUS); Daryl Mitchell (NZ); Kyle Jamieson (NZ); Bevon Jacobs (NZ); Shadab Khan (PAK); Vriitya Aravind (UAE); Khuzaima Bin Tanveer (UAE); Matiullah Khan (UAE); Sanjay Pahal (UAE); Andries Gous (USA); Kyle Mayers (WI); Khary Pierre (WI); Ramon Simmonds (WI) and Zachary Carter (WI).
