Guyana’s contribution to cricketing legacy, identity remains immeasurable – CWI President
As the Co-operative Republic of Guyana marks 60 years of independence, Cricket West Indies proudly joins in celebrating a milestone rooted in history, struggle, and the enduring affirmation of self-determination.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, management, players, and staff of Cricket West Indies, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of Guyana, at home and across the diaspora, on this significant national anniversary.

Guyana’s independence in 1966 stood as part of a wider Caribbean awakening, a period in which nations moved from colonial rule toward the assertion of identity, dignity, and political voice. It was a transformation that shaped not only governance, but also culture, confidence, and the way Caribbean people came to see themselves in the world.
For decades, Guyana has stood as one of the foundational pillars of West Indies cricket. From the brilliance of Sir Clive Lloyd, whose leadership transformed the West Indies into a dominant global force, to the elegance of Rohan Kanhai, the genius of Alvin Kallicharran, the resilience of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and the modern excellence of generations who continue to wear the maroon with pride, Guyana’s contribution to the cricketing legacy and identity of the Caribbean remains immeasurable.
In that broader historical context, West Indies cricket itself emerged as both a product and expression of post-colonial Caribbean identity, a space where talent became voice, and where unity across territories became a statement of purpose and possibility. Guyana’s role in that story has been profound and enduring.
As Guyana continues its national journey, Cricket West Indies salutes its people for their resilience, achievement, and continued contribution to the advancement of the region.
Happy 60th Independence Anniversary, Guyana.
Dr. Kishore Shallow
President, CWI
