Guyana delegation attends 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Tanzania
A Guyanese Parliamentary Delegation, headed by Speaker of the National Assembly and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council Member, Manzoor Nadir is currently attending the 153rd Assembly of the IPU and related meetings at the Arusha International Conference Centre, Arusha, Tanzania, during the period October 5 – 9, 2026.
The Delegation is also comprised of Human Services and Social Security Minister, Dr. Vindhya Persaud who is also a member of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians of the IPU; Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister and Member of the Bureau of Democracy and Human Rights of the IPU, Warren Kwame McCoy and Secretary to the Delegation and Parliamentary Executive Officer, Dr. Carlleta Charles.
The Assembly will see a General Debate on the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all”.
The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate and a Resolution, Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities, piloted by the Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, on which Minister McCoy sits as an integral Bureau Member.
The week of activities also includes: meetings of all the IPU’s parliamentary bodies, including its Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, and the Bureau and Forum of Women Parliamentarians; meeting of the Group of Latin America and Caribbean Parliaments; workshops and side events for parliamentarians on empowering people with disabilities; the election of a new IPU President; and governing Council meetings to elect Members to IPU Offices and make decisions for the effective operations of the IPU.
The IPU, founded more than 135 years ago, is a global organisation comprising 184 National Parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies. It facilitates parliamentary democracy and supports parliamentarians in promoting peace through useful platforms to build sustainable relationships and networks.
