Corentyne fatal stabbing: Mother surrenders teen to Police

Police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) have apprehended a teenage suspect in connection with the fatal stabbing of a labourer at Nigg Village, Corentyne, on Friday afternoon. The suspect, who is being identified only by the alias “Fat Boy” was taken into custody on Sunday as Police continued their probe into the killing of 48-year-old Carter Baboolall, also called “Baboo”.

Attorney-at-law Vinay Punwa, who is representing the teenager, confirmed that his client is now in Police custody. According to information received, the teen’s mother reportedly contacted the police after learning of his whereabouts and subsequently accompanied him as he surrendered to investigators.

Punwa said the teenager has denied attacking Baboolall without provocation and claimed that he was assaulted during the confrontation.According to the attorney, the teen alleged that Baboolall had cuffed him several times and also lashed him with a piece of wood during the altercation. Punwa further claimed that there is evidence to support the teenager’s account.

Baboolall of Nigg New Housing area reportedly died after being stabbed several times during a confrontation near the Nigg Post Office along the Corentyne Public Road.

Following the incident, the teenager had reportedly gone into hiding while the police launched a manhunt for him.

Eyewitnesses had reported seeing Baboolall lying in a nearby trench shortly after the confrontation. Residents later pulled him from the trench and rushed him to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident reportedly stemmed from an argument that escalated into a scuffle. Relatives of the suspect had earlier appealed for him to surrender to police.

Investigations are continuing.
