Guyana could become testing ground for Silicon Valley innovation – US official

The United States sees potential in Guyana to become a testing ground for Silicon Valley innovation, with American tech companies possibly using the country to pilot new technologies and explore opportunities to establish local operations.
This is according to US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg following his meeting with President Dr Irfaan Ali at State House in Guyana on Wednesday.
Helberg told a subsequent press briefing at the US Embassy that there are tremendous opportunities for collaboration between Silicon Valley and Guyana.
“President Ali is very interested in promoting entrepreneurship, and through that we discuss a fair bit [of] opportunities of collaboration between Silicon Valley and Guyana in all sectors, including in the agricultural and food technology sector. We think that there is a lot of room that can be explored to actually materialise those opportunities and make Guyana potentially an incredible place for Silicon Valley companies to come test new technologies and potentially set up shop here. So, we were very encouraged about that,” the US official noted.
According to Helberg, President Ali has a great vision of modernising Guyana and bringing technology to the country.
“I’m sure it hasn’t escaped all of you that we’re currently living through an incredibly transformative time in the technology sector, particularly with respect to the artificial intelligence revolution, which is really poised to be a huge tailwind for economic growth in the years ahead, as well as an opportunity for countries around the world to leapfrog a lot of the old infrastructure and the old way of doing things. President Ali is totally committed to ensuring that Guyana plays an important part in that technological revolution,” he noted.
In April 2025, President Ali visited Silicon Valley, California, to engage with major technology companies and explore collaborations to accelerate Guyana’s digital transformation.
Among the major technology companies Ali visited was IBM, one of the world’s oldest and largest technology firms, known for its leadership in IT consulting, computer technology and innovation. During his visit to IBM’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, President Ali met with Director Jeff Welser and members of his team. Discussions focused on advancements in quantum computing and data management, including technologies aimed at building more resilient and secure systems.
IBM has been behind several major technological innovations over the decades, including the development of ATM technology and magnetic stripe cards. According to information released following the meeting, the company also expressed interest in collaborating with Guyana on innovative solutions tailored to the country’s development needs.
Another company that President Ali toured was Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus. Microsoft is another multinational technology corporation known for its software, services, devices and solutions, including the Windows operating system and the Office suite.
President Ali also paid a visit to the innovation offices of Google X – the birthplace of many innovative start-ups in Silicon Valley. While there, he met with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Astro Teller and his team, and they discussed potential solutions and future collaboration between Guyana and Google X.
Additionally, President Ali met with a team of top executives from the hardware giant Nvidia at its headquarters in Silicon Valley. While there, the Nvidia team presented the company’s vision for sovereign nation artificial intelligence to the Guyanese delegation.
Nvidia is traditionally a graphics and hardware technology company that has gained momentum in other business streams, including the build-out of AI factories and upskilling of the workforce, as well as the video game industry, where its graphics cards are known for their powerful performance in gaming, enabling high frame rates.
President Ali is aggressively driving Guyana’s digital agenda, centred on AI, modernised digital infrastructure, and fully digitised Government services.
