Shockwaves were sent through the football fraternity on Tuesday evening as Golden Jaguars Head Coach Thomas Dooley announced his resignation, less than a year after his appointment. Head Coach of Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Football Team, Thomas Dooley, has resigned from the post, effective immediately. The revelation was made on Tuesday, as Dooley communicated his decision to members of the National Team, also expressing his belief that the team can ascend to the CONCACAF Nations League ‘A’ and Gold Cup once again.

In the correspondence seen by this publication, Dooley wrote: “Dear players, dear staff, I want to let you know personally that I have made the decision to resign from my position as Head Coach of the Guyana National Team, effective immediately. This was not an easy decision because I have great respect for you as players and as people.

I appreciate the commitment, effort, and trust you have shown during our time together. I want to thank each of you for your hard work, your professionalism, and the pride you have shown in representing Guyana. It has been an honor to work with you and to be part of your journey. Your journey is not over; it is just the beginning. Believe in yourselves individually and as a team. Soon you will be back in Nations League A and back fighting for the Gold Cup.”

After the announcement, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) shared a brief statement on Dooley’s departure on Tuesday night. The Federation, via its social media platform, stated, “Head Coach of the Guyana Golden Jaguars, Thomas Dooley, has decided to pursue new opportunities outside of Guyana, bringing his nine-month tenure with the Federation to a close after joining the team on September 9, 2025.” In his nine -month tenure, Dooley maintained an unbeaten streak in a series of friendly matches. Those included victories over Bonaire (2-1), Antigua and Barbuda (4-1), Dominica (2-0), and Belize (3-1).

However, the Coach’s tenure did not come without controversy, which arose over comments made to local players in the November 2025 window, described by the players as ’embarrassing. ‘ Following a formal investigation by the Federation and conversations between the Coach and players, it was noted that the matter had been resolved. Dooley was appointed to the post in July 2025, following a month – long hiring process by the Federation. The Coach had also taken the reins of the National Under-20 outfit earlier this year for the CONCACAF U20 Qualifiers.
