Family, friends and well-wishers gathered on Sunday to celebrate a major milestone as Madalene Hill marked her 100th birthday. Hill was born in Good Hope, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and later migrated to England where she spent many years working in the healthcare sector. During her time there, she cared for many children and families.
Madalene’s sister, Marjorie Hill, 90, said her sister’s kindness and dedication touched many lives over the years. She noted that while living abroad, Madalene travelled extensively and visited several countries around the world, except Australia, which she always hoped to visit one day.
After retiring, Hill returned to Guyana where she remained active in her community and later established a small business called “Aunty May’s Bits and Pieces,” through which she sold clothing and other items.
Even at 100 years old, family members say she still maintains good cognitive health and remains alert and aware of her surroundings. Although she never had children of her own, Hill is surrounded by many nieces and nephews who regard her as a mother figure. Her sister explained that the centenarian has always been loved and appreciated by many people both in Guyana and overseas. “She touched many lives over the years. People from different parts of the world came to celebrate with her today because she is so loved and appreciated,” Marjorie said.
Her family said they remain deeply grateful for her presence and the impact she has had on their lives.
“We are so grateful for her and pray that the Lord continues to bless her,” Hill’s sister expressed.
