Zeelugt to benefit from upgraded roads, new public facilities

Residents of Zeelugt on the East Bank of Essequibo in Region Three will benefit from a comprehensive community development plan focused on improving infrastructure, public spaces and the overall quality of life as the government advances its Model Villages initiative.

For Zeelugt, assessments conducted ahead of the consultation identified several priority areas, including drainage improvements, road upgrades, enhanced street lighting, improved public spaces, upgraded culverts, security measures and better maintenance of community facilities including burial grounds.

The improvements include the rehabilitation of drainage networks, upgrades to roadways and walkways, installation of community CCTV cameras, improved lighting systems and the development of recreational and public spaces.

A major feature of the plan is the construction of a new market in Zeelugt, which is expected to increase economic activity and provide additional opportunities for residents and small businesses.

While speaking to residents at the Zeelugt Primary School on Monday, the president highlighted plans to improve key community facilities, including the primary school, health facilities and other public spaces, ensuring they meet modern standards with better access, cleanliness and safety.

“We want everybody to experience the transformation that is taking place,” the president stated, explaining that the programme will focus on physical infrastructure as well as building stronger community values and improving living conditions.”

Works will be implemented in phases, beginning with critical infrastructure such as drainage, before moving into beautification measures including tree planting and further enhancement of public spaces.

Zeelugt is among more than 20 communities selected as pilot areas under the Model Villages initiative, which seeks to create communities with improved infrastructure, stronger services and a higher standard of living for residents. [DPI]
