Charged, Jose Armando Alsena Coll and murdered, Rodwell La Cruz

Three months after Rodwell La Cruz was chopped to death for allegedly stealing a quantity of gold at the Iwokrama Protected Area, Siparuni River, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), a 31-year-old Venezuelan national was charged with the heinous crime.

Jose Armando Alsena Coll, a welder from Sheriff Street, Georgetown, was reportedly arrested on May 28, 2026, and made a virtual court appearance before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until June 26, 2026.

It was reported that on March 10, 2026, La Cruz, also called “Kabaloo, ” of Warapoka Village, North West District (NWD), Region One (Barima-Waini), and another male were in the kitchen of a mining camp when they were approached by three males who accused them of stealing gold from a sluice box. They were later ordered to a nearby watch camp where they met another male.

It is alleged that the suspects, armed with a handgun, cutlasses, and a mattock handle, dealt the men several blows about their bodies, causing injuries, after which they left the area. The injured men were taken to the riverfront, where La Cruz succumbed to his injuries.
