Local JV commissions landmark iNOVaTHERM™ technology to improve waste management in O&G sector

Sustainable Environmental Solutions (SES), a local joint venture established by Gaico Construction, Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI), and Lamor Corporation, has commissioned its state-of-the-art iNOVaTHERM™ technology, marking a transformative step forward for environmentally responsible waste management in Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil and gas sector.

Founded six years ago on a shared vision to deliver world-class sustainable solutions, SES has become a critical partner to the industry, safely treating hazardous and non-hazardous waste while prioritising environmental protection and operational excellence.

The introduction of the iNOVaTHERM™ system, developed by NOV Inc., represents a major technological breakthrough. As the first installation of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, this fully electric, zero-discharge system sets a new benchmark for sustainability and innovation. It doubles the facility’s processing capacity from 50 to 100 metric tons of drilling waste per day while dramatically reducing the environmental impact.

At the heart of this technology is a commitment to circularity and resource efficiency. The system recovers more than 99% of base oil, returning it to the supply chain for reuse in offshore drilling operations. Wastewater and dry residuals are also fully recycled within the facility, significantly reducing waste and eliminating environmental discharge.

Kushnarine Singh, Service Manager at NOV, highlighted the system’s exceptional environmental performance, noting that it consistently achieves less than 0.1% oil-on-cuttings (OOC), surpassing some of the most stringent global standards.

This milestone reflects SES’s unwavering commitment to building a greener future, one where industrial growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

Equally significant is SES’s achievement of 100 per cent local content in the management and operations of the facility. Through strategic collaboration with international entities, including Lamor, NOV, and ExxonMobil Guyana, SES has, over the years, invested heavily in developing Guyanese talent, ensuring that the expertise driving this advanced operation is proudly local.

The journey of General Manager Kevin Balgobin exemplifies this vision. Rising from Environmental and Quality Control Specialist to Operations Manager and now General Manager, his progression reflects SES’s deep commitment to empowering people and creating meaningful career pathways.

Mr. Balgobin praised his team, emphasising the human element behind the achievement.

“This technology and our operations are being managed and operated by locals who have elevated their expertise to meet the highest demands of the global energy sector. It is amazing to see how people have utilised their knowledge and skills to excel in this industry. I am really happy that this is the case here at SES. We are happy about the technology, but we are even happier with the people,” he said.

Natina Singh, Logistics Operations Superintendent at ExxonMobil Guyana, underscored the importance of recognising such progress, noting that milestones like these highlight the power of collaboration and long-term investment in local capacity.

Mr. Bobby Gossai Jr., Senior Petroleum Coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources, commended the company for its strong local content footprint, describing it as a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved through sustained investment in local capacity and expertise. “This achievement demonstrates what is possible when we invest in our people. Guyanese professionals are delivering world-class services right here at home, contributing to both economic growth and environmental responsibility.”

Oliver Kassam, CEO of GYSBI, in brief remarks, emphasised the importance of sustainable solutions in advancing the industry while driving long-term growth and capability development in Guyana.
