The Linden sawmill's fire has been isolated

Two days later, firefighters continue to respond to the large fire that broke out at the Waaldijk Sawmill in Amelia’s Ward, Linden, late Wednesday night.

According to the Home Affairs Ministry, as of this morning (Friday, April 11, 2025), the blaze has been contained, but is not yet fully extinguished. It said the fire has been successfully isolated due to the rapid efforts by emergency teams.

In addition, nearby trenches have been excavated around the affected area to prevent the fire from spreading further. The fire has reportedly been confined to a gully located behind the sawmill area, and officials believe this helped limit the threat to surrounding residential and industrial properties.

“While the flames remain active within the isolated zone, fire crews are monitoring the situation closely and working toward full extinguishment. The origin of the fire remains under investigation,” the ministry said in a social media post today.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Guyana Fire Service have also extended sincere thanks and appreciation to all supporting agencies, including Bosai, the Regional Administration, the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force, and the many civilians who are assisting in response efforts.

Authorities are also urging the public to avoid the area while emergency operations continue.
