A 32-year-old man has been taken into police custody in connection with a late-night fire that destroyed at least nine buildings at Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, on Friday.
The blaze occurred sometime between 22:30 hours and 23:30 hours, during which multiple buildings, including homes and businesses, were flattened.
According to the Guyana Police Force, preliminary investigations revealed that a 40-year-old businessman/miner of Mainstay/Whyaka Village, Essequibo Coast, was awakened by a fire originating from a nearby unoccupied wooden structure. An alarm was raised, and public-spirited citizens responded by activating water pumps; however, the fire spread rapidly, destroying several buildings in the area.
It was reported that a number of persons sustained losses, including the business establishments. At least 20 persons have been displaced as a result of the fire.
Police have since arrested and questioned the 32-year-old male, who hails from Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, as part of ongoing investigations.
The 32-year-old remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, following the blaze, Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond and Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat on Saturday visited the community and met with residents affected by the fire. Efforts are being made to provide assistance to residents where possible.
