A joint operation between the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Tuesday intercepted imported cannabis worth $71 million, along with three pistols and 18 rounds of 9mm ammunition at Muneshwer’s Wharf in Georgetown.

The guns and ammunition found in the barrels

Based on reports received, the agencies, acting on information received, searched two incoming barrels from the United States of America (USA), during which they found 71 transparent parcels containing foreign cannabis weighing 37.2 kilograms with a street value of $71 million, along with the guns and ammunition. As such, several persons were arrested and are assisting with investigations.

This seizure is part of ongoing collaborative efforts by GRA Customs and CANU officers to prevent the entry of illicit drugs concealed in cargo and other shipments. The agencies remain committed to strengthening security measures and ensuring that Guyana’s borders remain protected against drug trafficking.
