The firearm and ammunition found on the suspect

Police in Regional Division #6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) have arrested a male passenger who had arrived in Guyana from Suriname via the backtrack service after a firearm and ammunition were found in his possession.

The discovery was made on Friday (March 6, 2026) about 08:30hrs during an operation conducted at No. 78 Village, Corriverton, Berbice.

During the operation, an Intelligence Officer attached to the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) stopped and searched the male passenger as well as his luggage.

During the search, a cream-coloured side bag was opened, where one 9mm pistol was found along with two magazines and twenty-nine (29) live rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The suspect, a 25-year-old fisherman of Logwood, East Coast Demerara, was arrested and escorted to the Springlands Police Station along with the suspected firearm and ammunition, which were processed and lodged pending investigation.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
