International cricket team Desert Vipers is leveraging its global platform to champion environmental responsibility, becoming the first sports team to join Guyana’s Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA) and a signatory to the Sports for Nature initiative.

The team’s sustainability efforts were highlighted at the official opening of the Second Global Biodiversity Alliance Conference and Financing Forum on Friday, where its Sustainability and Biodiversity Awareness Kit was unveiled.

A video presentation showcased the team’s progress in reducing its environmental footprint, reporting a 27 per cent reduction in its carbon footprint and a 77 per cent reduction in plastic use since its inaugural season.

The team also highlighted its participation in a BioBlitz activity during Guyana’s Global Super League, which brought together players, students and supporters to document local biodiversity, recording 1,600 observations across 600 species.

Guyanese cricketer and Desert Vipers ambassador Shimron Hetmyer said the team’s commitment had shown him how simple changes could make a meaningful difference, particularly through reducing single-use plastics.

“Instead of just getting a plastic bottle and throwing it away, you can have your own bottle and keep refilling it. I think just that little helps,” he said.

Hetmyer also expressed hope that similar environmental practices could be introduced into Guyana’s local cricket, beginning with club teams in Berbice and the Amazon Warriors.

He subsequently presented President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali with a signed Desert Vipers sustainability jersey and an autographed GBA cap, symbolising the team’s commitment to using sport as a platform for environmental protection.

The biodiversity alliance forum is being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) in Liliendaal until October 31. [DPI]
