Couple slapped with narco trafficking charge on $1M bail each

A common-law couple accused of possessing more than 29 kilograms (kg) of cannabis for trafficking was granted bail in the sum of $1 million each when they appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Joseph Mohanlall, a 44-year-old contractor, and Candy Lambert, a 34-year-old self-employed woman, both of Lot 14 Bel Air Road, Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.

They pleaded not guilty to separate charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The charges allege that on September 6, at their Lamaha Gardens residence, Mohanlall and Lambert had 29.510 kg of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking. The offence was brought under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.

The charges were filed by Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU). The couple was represented by Attorney-at-Law Bernard DaSilva.

After granting bail, the Magistrate transferred the matters to Court Five, where they will continue on October 16.
