The body of 20-year-old Guyanese Narendra Mark Persaud was recovered from the Takutu River on Tuesday morning, a day after he jumped into the water to escape a bee attack.
Persaud had gone missing on Monday afternoon near Porto São Paulo, in the rural area of Bonfim, after being swept away by the current.
According to reports in the Brazilian media, he was in a small boat with his wife, their 12-year-old son, and a friend when a swarm of bees attacked them. In an attempt to escape, Persaud, who could not swim, jumped into the river but was unable to overcome the strong current and disappeared beneath the water.
The 5th Independent Border Military Police Company (5th CIPMFron) in Brazil responded to the incident, and the Brazil Fire Department launched a search operation on Monday. Divers continued their efforts into the night, eventually recovering Persaud’s body the following morning.
His remains were taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in Boa Vista, where an expert examination will be conducted before the body is released for burial.
