President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced that China has become the latest country to join the Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA).

According to the Head of State, China’s membership in the Alliance represents some two-thirds of the worlds population.

President Ali made this announcement this morning at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), where the second GBA Conference is being held.

The two-day conference, which got underway on Friday, brings together global leaders, researchers, financial institutions and other stakeholders to mobilise financing for biodiversity conservation.

This announcement of China joining the GBA, comes just one day after six new members were presented with membership certificates during the opening ceremony of the conference.

Those newest members are: Colombia, Rwanda, Panama, India, France and the United Kingdom.

With these additions, the Alliance’s membership has now increased to 148 just over a year after its launch in July 2025 with 17 founding members.
