Six firefighters attached to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) on Friday, September 18, 2026, received certification to operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, following the successful completion of a specialised Drone Operations Training Programme.
The certificates were presented during a small but significant closing ceremony held in the Boardroom at GFS Headquarters, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
The programme forms part of the Service’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its operational capabilities through the use of modern technology.
During the training, participants were exposed to key areas including hazard assessment, aerial reconnaissance, incident monitoring and thermal imaging.
The programme combined theoretical instruction with practical exercises and was delivered by trained professionals from Caliper Drones.
Delivering brief remarks at the ceremony, Chief Fire Officer Mr Gregory Wickham highlighted the importance of having trained drone operators within the Service, noting the valuable role the technology can play in supporting firefighting and emergency response operations.
He encouraged the newly certified operators to use the knowledge and skills gained responsibly and effectively as the Service continues to modernise and enhance its response capabilities.
The Guyana Fire Service congratulates the six firefighters on successfully completing the programme and looks forward to integrating this new capability into its operations.
