David Singh, 41, of Eccles New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to obtaining money by false pretence.
Singh, a driver, was arrested on Sunday and formally charged on Wednesday with the offence, which is contrary to Section 194 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
He appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court where he entered a guilty plea and was immediately sentenced.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had issued a wanted bulletin for Singh in relation to a $2.6 million firearm licence fraud.
Police said the crime was committed against two brothers, a 35-year-old contractor and a 30-year-old operator, both of Best Plantation, West Coast Demerara.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were allegedly approached by the Eccles resident, who reportedly claimed that he could assist them in obtaining firearm licences.
During the process, the victims allegedly paid a total of $2,610,000 and later received documents purporting to be firearm licence approvals. The documents were subsequently examined and found to be fraudulent.
