One motorcyclist was killed and another was injured after they were struck by a motor car at the junction of Camp and New Market Streets, Georgetown, in the wee hours of today.
The accident involved two motorcycles, one driven by Gladwin Dorway, a 39-year-old male of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, and the other driven by a 27-year-old male of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara.
At around 03:05h today, a motor car, driven by a 28-year-old female of South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, was proceeding east along New Market Street and, upon approaching Camp Street, allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign before entering the intersection, where it collided with one of the motorcycles. The impact subsequently caused the second motorcycle, which was also proceeding north along Camp Street, to collide with the right front side of the motor car.
As a result of the collision, both motorcyclists were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries about their bodies. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Gladwin Dorway was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
The other motorcyclist remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation receiving medical treatment.
CCTV cameras were seen in the area and will be reviewed
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor car returned readings of 0.25 micrograms and 0.21 micrograms.
The driver of the motor car is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
