A boat captain is now dead, while a passenger was critically injured following a boat mishap in the vicinity of Tapir Landing, Cuyuni River, on Thursday. The deceased man has been identified as 57-year-old Steve Daniels of Kartabo Village, Lower Mazaruni River.
Police stated that the 26-foot wooden boat, powered by a 200 HP Yamaha outboard engine, was proceeding in the vicinity of Tapir Landing with four occupants when it collided with an 18-foot aluminum boat, powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine and operated by the now-deceased. As a result of the collision, the captain of the 18-foot aluminum boat and three occupants received injuries to their bodies. The captain reportedly died at the scene.
The injured passengers were taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where one of them was admitted in serious condition. Police have since arrested the captain of the 26-foot boat, and he is assisting with investigations.
