Lethem teen slapped with 15 traffic-related charges

Nineteen-year-old Joel Darrel from Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo) was on Tuesday slapped with 15 traffic-related charges when he appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.

Police stated that on Friday, April 24, 2026, along the Tabatinga Public Road, Lethem, Central Rupununi, the teen was driving without being the holder of a valid license; driving an unlicensed motor vehicle; driving an uninsured motor vehicle; driving an uncertified motor vehicle; driving a vehicle with obscured identification marks on the rear; failing to conform to a sign; making a loud and continuous noise; and failing to report an accident.

In addition, he was further charged in connection with several traffic and other offenses committed on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. These include failing to have an identification mark on the front of a motor vehicle; driving an uncertified motor vehicle; driving an unlighted motor vehicle at the front; driving an unlicensed motor vehicle; making a loud and continuous noise; failing to have an identification mark on the front of a motor vehicle; and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

Meanwhile, during his court appearance on Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined $347,500, along with nine months of community service.
