The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security continues to take opportunities directly to communities across Guyana, ensuring that more citizens are equipped with practical skills to improve their livelihoods. Over the past week, residents of Region Ten benefited from the Ministry’s Climate Smart Agriculture Training under the Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN), where 26 women and three men successfully completed the programme.
Facilitated by the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), participants received both theoretical and practical training in modern, climate-smart farming techniques that can be transformed into sustainable income-generating opportunities.
As part of the programme, participants visited the Kairuni Farm along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, the Vermicomposting Farm in Amelia’s Ward, Linden, and the Hydroponics Farm at Watooka, where they gained hands-on experience in innovative agricultural practices. Classroom sessions were also held at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Boardroom.
During the training, participants were introduced to high-value crop cultivation, including celery, dragon fruit, cabbage and lettuce, along with vertical gardening, hydroponics, shade house management, vermicomposting, natural pesticide preparation, irrigation systems, and essential farm record keeping and business management.
The training forms part of the WIIN Programme, an initiative spearheaded by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Vindhya Persaud, which continues to create pathways for citizens to earn, grow and become more self-reliant. Through initiatives like these, the Ministry is empowering Guyanese with practical skills to establish sustainable agricultural ventures while contributing to the country’s food security.
