A 21-year-old man is now dead after the car he was driving crashed into a parked tractor and trailer shortly after midnight on Monday.
Dead is Ayinde Rogers.
Police say Rogers was alone in the vehicle when, at about 12:10 Monday morning, he was proceeding along the Trafalgar Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Investigators believe he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the car to veer off the roadway and collide with a parked tractor and trailer.
The impact left the vehicle extensively damaged, with sections of the roof and body crushed and torn apart.
The injured man was pulled from the wreckage by persons at the scene shortly before police arrived.
Rogers’ father, Dave Rogers, said he was awakened by relatives and initially struggled to believe that his son had died.
“He said, ‘Daddy, my brother dead, my brother dead’. I said, I couldn’t believe it. I said, no way. I got a friend, a very good friend of mine. The man called me and said, ‘You got to go, you got to go and see what happened to your son.’ And I left and I go. I see my son lying on the ground, dead,” the father related.
Police investigations into the fatal accident are continuing.
