A 20-year-old man has suffered injuries in a fire that destroyed the home he shared with his father at Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The fire started just after midday on Tuesday and it quickly engulfed the wooden and concrete structure, which was home to 48-year-old Ishmael King, a vendor, and his 20-year-old son, Aniel King.
The vendor said he was out plying his trade when he received a call that his home was on fire. He says his son, a teacher, had not gone to school that day, but, was at home cooking lunch, when the fire started.
Despite losing nearly everything, the vendor says he is grateful that his son survived.
The fire gutted the house, destroying clothing, furniture, appliances, and nearly $250,000 he had put aside for his business. His son also lost his passport, ID card, and all personal items.
The Kings estimate their total losses, including the structure, at nearly $6 million. The Guyana Fire Service is continuing its investigations.
