Uitvlugt CDC engaged on employment opportunities through block-making initiative

Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, met with the Casdah-Uitvlugt Community Development Committee (CDC) in Region Three, on Wednesday afternoon, responding to a keen interest from the group for their integration into the Community-based Employment Stimulation Project (CESP).

​The CESP was launched in 2021 as a flagship initiative of President Irfaan Ali to foster employment opportunities and local economic growth. The initiative offers community groups the opportunity to produce concrete blocks for contractors working under the national housing initiative, while also allowing them to expand their customer base to other private consumers.

The engagement, which included Parliamentary Secretary, Thandi McAlister, Director of Community Development at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Mr. Gladwin Charles and technical staff, provided a comprehensive roadmap for the project’s implementation.

​Minister Croal highlighted the importance of channeling the energy of young people into productive ventures. He noted that the Ministry is eager to work with communities to help residents develop professional skill sets that will serve them long into the future.

​The CDC was advised that they must first complete the necessary registration process. The Ministry of Housing provides startup assistance such as block-making materials, as well as, comprehensive training designed to equip participants with both technical and business expertise. This holistic approach ensures that participants are not only skilled block-makers but also capable small-business owners who can manage their accounts and production cycles effectively.

​The CESP has already demonstrated significant impact, having successfully trained various groups, including persons living with disabilities. A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed in 2024 with the Guyana Prison Service for the production of 500,000 blocks.
