Mervin Williams, a 25-year-old resident of the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, was killed in an accident on Friday along the Linden to Mabura Road in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

The accident occurred at about 15:00hrs and involved Motor Lorry #GYY 815, which was driven by Williams. There was on other occupant in the truck at the time of the accident, Deon Wilson, a 24-year-old porter of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Based on police reports, the truck was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane of the Mabura Road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed. The road is made up of asphalt, which is smooth and was wet due to rainfall.

It is alleged that on the approach of a left bend, the said motor lorry began to slide and as a result the driver lost control and the lorry ‘turned turtle’ and ended up on its left side, pinning the driver who remained there for some time.

Subsequently, another lorry arrived and assisted in pulling the lorry (GYY 815) off his body.

The porter who was seated on the right passenger side received minor injuries.
He (porter) was picked up by public-spirited citizens in a conscious state and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was treated and later sent away.

Meanwhile, the driver was picked up in an unconscious state by the Police and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex and was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The body was later taken to the Pensioner’s Mortuary, awaiting a post mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
