The lifeless body of two-year-old Zoria Seegobin of Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was pulled from a trench at her grandparents’ home at Grant Atlas, Lower Pomeroon River, Essequibo, in the wee hours of Christmas Day.
Based on reports received, the child’s grandmother collected her from her Friendship EBD home on Monday to spend the Christmas holiday at their home in Grant Atlas, Lower Pomeroon River.
Police stated that on Thursday, the child’s grandfather, Terrence Chase, went to take a bath at the canal located at the front of the house at about 2:00h after returning from a birthday party.
The grandmother also left the house to use the washroom. At that time, the child was still asleep.
However, about 15 minutes later, the grandparents returned home only to find Seegobin missing.
They immediately raised an alarm, and a search party was promptly established to look for the child, but she was not located.
Subsequent search led to the discovery of the child submerged in the trench in the yard.
At the time of the discovery, the body was moving slightly, but despite CPR, she did not regain consciousness.
She was taken to the Charity Cottage Hospital , where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was examined by ranks , but no marks of violence were found. An investigation is ongoing.
