In a landmark development for regional motorsport, the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMRSC) on Wednesday announced that the South Dakota Circuit will host the third Round of the 2026 GT Challenge de las Américas championship.
Scheduled for July 11 and 12, this event marks the first time an international motor racing series outside of the now-defunct Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) will be contested on Guyanese soil.
The arrival of the GT Challenge de las Américas promises to elevate the spectacle at South Dakota to unprecedented levels. Fans can expect a grid populated by top-tier GT3 machinery, featuring the world’s premier automotive brands, including Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Ferrari, and McLaren.
The series brings with it top Latin American drivers and elite race engineers from around the globe, turning the South Dakota Circuit into a hub of international motorsport excellence.
GMRSC President Mahendra Boodhoo highlighted the magnitude of the occasion. “This will be big for Guyana motorsports and sports tourism,” Boodhoo stated. “Hosting a series of this calibre places Guyana firmly on the international map, attracting not just race teams but media and fans from across the Americas.”
Bringing the series to Guyana has been a long-term strategic goal. Negotiations began in 2023, spearheaded by a GMR&SC trio comprising President Mahendra Boodhoo, veteran racer Mark Vieira, and Executive Member Luis Kumar.
The group worked closely with Trinidadian motorsport stalwart Franklyn Boodram to make the logistical and organisational leap a reality.
Local fans received a preview of this high-level competition during the “Caribbean Clash of Champions” in November. That event featured the country’s first-ever GT3 race, with Mark Vieira and Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr (Team AJM) piloting Porsche GT3 Cup cars.
Both Vieira and Team AJM are confirmed to represent the Golden Arrowhead in the upcoming July event. Joining them will be one of the region’s most decorated drivers, Kristian Jeffrey.
The two-time CMRC Group Four Champion and 2022 Radical Caribbean Champion has acquired a new GT3 car specifically for this challenge, bolstering a formidable Guyanese line-up ready to defend home turf against the Latin American invasion.
