Pres. Ali highlights gas bottling plant as key investment to reduce cooking gas costs

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the planned gas bottling plant in Wales, Region Three, is part of a long-term investment to reduce cooking gas costs for households.

Speaking at his press conference on Monday, the president said the investment in the new gas bottling facility is one of several measures being pursued to reduce long-term costs across the country.

The proposed Guyana Gas Bottling and Logistics Company (GGBLC) is being developed as part of the wider Gas-to-Energy development at Wales and is intended to bottle, transport and distribute liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for domestic use.

The government had previously estimated annual domestic demand at approximately three million 20-pound cylinders, with a retail market value of about G$14 billion.

Under the proposed arrangement, the facility will receive its cooking gas supply from Guyana Power and Gas Inc. (GPGI), a government-owned company, at wholesale prices before bottling and distributing the product across the country.

The project is estimated at US$40 million and is being structured as a public-private partnership model. The facility is planned for Wales, east of the Gas-to-Energy combined-cycle power plant and Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) facility.

Additionally, the government invited proposals in 2025 for the facility’s design, engineering, construction and operation.

A total of 10 proposals were subsequently submitted by companies and consortiums with experience in gas bottling and related operations.

In a recent statement published by the Office of the Prime Minister on September 9 this year, the government is evaluating proposals for the gas bottling and logistics company, with an award expected by year-end.

The project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to use Guyana’s natural gas resources not only for electricity generation, but also for downstream industries and products that can lower costs and support economic activity. (DPI)
