Pres. Ali assures of independent & professional probe into Linden fatal shooting; urges against political exploitation of issue

President Dr Irfaan Ali has assured that there will be an independent and professional investigation into the fatal shooting of a youth from Linden, Region Ten, allegedly by a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Speaking with reporters on the sidelines of an event on Tuesday, the President urged the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to seek out whatever external support they need to ensure all stakeholders are comfortable with the outcome and process of the investigation.
“I want to say to the residents that we’re going to ensure with independent support that this matter is dealt with professionally and this should not be exploited politically. This is not a political issue, this is a serious issue,” President Ali said.
He added that all the established processes must be followed and already, the investigation has begun.
Ronaldo Peters, 21, was reportedly shot dead by a cop at One Mile, Wismar, Linden at around 17:30hrs on Monday.
The GPF in a statement said Peters was wanted for rape. In this regard, the police said a sergeant from the Wismar Police Station received information that Peters, also known as “MMR,” was seen at Shabba Bar in the One Mile area As a result, the sergeant, armed with a 9mm service pistol, and another rank, armed with a .38 service revolver, went to the location.
Upon arrival at Shabba Shop, Peters was reportedly spotted. It is alleged that upon seeing the police ranks, he attempted to flee and tried to jump a nearby fence.
According to police, the Sergeant managed to pull Peters off the fence, and during the process of restraining him, his service pistol, held in his right hand, discharged, striking Peters.
Peters was taken to the Mackenzie Public Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Police said that a medical examination revealed a single circular wound on the lower right side of his abdomen.
Nevertheless, the GPF said sergeant is currently under close arrest and has been escorted to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU). The OPR has since launched an investigation.
Meanwhile, residents in Linden are currently blocking off roads and burning debris in protest of the killing on the young man.
