Pres. Ali assures 2025 elections will be within constitutional timeframe; says PPP will never betray its mandate

With General and Regional Elections due this year, President Dr Irfaan Ali has assured that a date for the upcoming polls will be set within the constitutional timeframe.
On the sidelines of the launch of the universal healthcare voucher earlier today (Saturday, March 15, 2025), the Head of State also provided assurances to the Guyanese public that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government will never go beyond its constitutional mandate.
Asked by this publication when a date would be set for elections, Ali declared, “…I still have a lot of time. Elections, constitutionally, [are due] till closer to the end of the year, so don’t worry. What you can be assured of is that this government will not go a single day beyond its constitutional mandate, unlike what you… would’ve been exposed to after the No-Confidence Motion and leading into [the 2020] elections.”
The Guyanese Leader was of course referring to the 2020 General and Regional Elections, which were already overdue since the then David Granger-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) regime had fallen to a No Confidence Motion in December 2018 and was supposed to have called election within three months in accordance with Guyana’s constitution.
However, those elections were not held until more than a year later, on March 2, 2020. At those polls, the APNU/AFC lost by over 15,000 votes, but it took another five months of delays before President Ali and his government could be sworn in as a result of blatant attempts by top officials to derail the elections.
According to President Ali, Guyanese can be assured that the constitutional timeframes would be followed.
“You can be assured that we’ll be within our constitutional mandates and confidently, and we’ll be marching into elections. And I’ll see you after that,” he posited.
General Secretary of the ruling PPP/C, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has already hinted that Ali would return for a second term as the party’s Presidential Candidate at the upcoming polls.
He had explained during a March 6 press conference at the PPP’s Freedom House headquarters on Robb Street, Georgetown, that while there is an internal process to follow, it is almost a “foregone conclusion” that Ali will lead the PPP/C into the 2025 elections.
