The Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) is stronger today than ever before in its history, according to President Irfaan Ali on Sunday.

This is because of the party’s dedicated supporters and its strong leadership, who work tirelessly to contribute to the development of the country.

Ali was at the time speaking at the annual observance to celebrate the life of Dr Cheddi Jagan, at Babu Jaan, Port Mourant in Region Six.

According to President Ali, the PPP has never been seasonal in its approach to development.

He said the PPP has “leaders of international calibre but instead of going after personal gains”, they stay in Guyana even after life of service.

“They stay here committed to our party, that is the leadership that matters,” he said.

The President spoke of the rapid development that is taking place in the country across various sectors. He explained that whilst the PPP may make these results look easy, “it’s not easy”.

“It comes from sleepless nights, hard work every single day whilst we’re in office,” he said.

However, the president noted that even when the PPP was in opposition from 2015-2020, its leaders and members were always on the frontline, fighting for citizens’ rights.

“We are not seasonal in our approach to development,” he expressed.

He reminded me of when the former APNU+AFC government closed the sugar estates and attempted to take away Red House from the Cheddi Jagan Research Center.

“Always remember in the most difficult of times in this country…it is the PPP that remained on the frontline,” Ali said.

“Development is not about a seasonal gift, it’s about hard tireless work, it is not opportunistic, it is never opportunistic, it’s about full commitment, it’s about sacrifice,” he added.

President Ali said citizens need to be politically conscious and never forget the atrocious of the past.

He cautioned that there are forces that will “come and try to appeal to our emotions”.

Additionally, the Guyanese leader took a swipe at persons who believed the PPP would defend their wrongdoings in exchange for contributions to the party.

According to Ali, “When you become a member of this movement, you are volunteering your labour of love to country and to party.”

“This party cannot be bought or sold or traded…This party is owned by the people of this country who embrace a philosophy of freedom, democracy and unity…those are the owners of this party,” he said.
