A female pensioner is now dead, and a 25-year-old female hospitalised after they were attacked by a swarm of bees on Friday.
The dead woman has been identified as 77-year-old Mohadai Sankar of Success, East Coast Demerara.
The incident occurred at about 07:00 hours at the victim’s Success home.
According to police reports, Sankar, who was visiting from the United States of America and staying at her local address, along with the 25-year-old injured woman and two other persons, was attacked by a swarm of bees believed to have come from the roof of a neighbouring house.
The victims sustained multiple suspected bee stings during the incident. They were later assisted and taken to medical facilities.
Sankar was transported to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where she succumbed at about 18:45h on Friday while receiving medical treatment. The 25-year-old woman was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where her condition is listed as stable.
The body of Sankar was escorted to Jerricks Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The scene was visited by police, and personnel from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute were summoned to the area and brought the situation under control.
Investigations are ongoing.
