A pedal cyclist was killed on Saturday after colliding with a motorcycle on the New Amsterdam road in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Dead is Nicolas Agard, a 52-year-old resident of lot 39 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The accident occurred at about 13:40h on Republic Road, New Amsterdam, in the vicinity of Cheddi Jagan Street, involving the deceased’s bicycle and motorcycle CL 5071, which was being driven by a 21-year-old resident of Fort Ordinance.
According to the police, initial investigations revealed that both the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a safety helmet, and the pedal cyclist were travelling south along the eastern driving lane of the roadway, with the motorcyclist behind the cyclist. While in motion, the cyclist reportedly turned west at the same time the motorcyclist attempted to overtake, resulting in a collision on the western driving lane.
As a result of the impact, both men were thrown onto the road surface and sustained injuries to their bodies.
Agard was picked up in an unconscious condition by emergency medical technicians and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The motorcyclist was taken to the same hospital by members of the Guyana Police Force in a police vehicle, where he remains hospitalised in a conscious condition.
Police said the rider was not breath-analysed at the time due to his medical condition.
Investigations into the accident are continuing.
