The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) expresses profound disappointment and concern regarding the misuse and acts of vandalism targeting the newly commissioned sanitary facilities at the Guyana-China Friendship Park, West Bank Demerara.

Maintenance inspections have revealed severe and deliberate clogging of the sewerage system with large quantities of industrial-grade tissue and, most alarmingly, a fish was discovered in a toilet bowl. Such actions may result in significant plumbing failures and can temporarily inconvenience the public by forcing the closure of specific units for emergency repairs.

STRICT MONITORING AND LEGAL ACTION

The PAC wishes to remind the general public that the Guyana-China Friendship Park is under 24-hour CCTV surveillance and footage will be used to identify the individuals responsible for acts of vandalism.

“The PAC maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward the destruction of state property. Any individual found engaging in acts of vandalism or the deliberate sabotage of park facilities will be reported to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) immediately for criminal prosecution.”

A CALL FOR CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY

The Commission remains committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and functionality across all protected urban parks. However, the sustainability of these public spaces relies heavily on the cooperation of the patrons who use them.

The PAC strongly urges all visitors to:

  • Dispose of waste properly in the bins provided throughout the park.
  • Use sanitary facilities for their intended purposes only.
  • Report suspicious behaviour or any seen acts of vandalism to the park security personnel on-site.

The Guyana-China Friendship Park was designed to be a sanctuary for families, fitness enthusiasts, and tourists alike. We appeal to the collective conscience of the public to treat these facilities with the respect and care they deserve, ensuring that the park remains a source of national pride for generations to come.
