Over 18lbs cocaine found, 2 arrested after high-speed chase with CANU agents
Officers attached to the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Saturday seized some 18.135 pounds of cocaine and arrested two 2 males but not before engaged in a high-speed chase in Georgetown with one of the suspects.
According to a statement from CANU today, its officers, acting on information received, conducted an operation in Kitty, Georgetown, in the vicinity of David Street, which led to the interception of two motor vehicles.

During the interception attempt, the driver of a white Volkswagen motorcar, with registration number PAL 4117, fled the scene at high speed.
CANU officers pursued the vehicle. During the chase, the driver attempted to evade the officers, resulting in a collision involving several CANU vehicles.
In pursuit along Sheriff Street, before the intersection with Rupert Craig Highway, officers observed a brown cardboard box being thrown from the said motorcar. Several officers stopped to retrieve the box, while others continued the pursuit.
The motor vehicle was subsequently intercepted at the intersection of Rupert Craig Highway and Sheriff Street. The vehicle was driven by Shaquille Gordon, who was the lone occupant at the time.
The brown cardboard box recovered during the pursuit was shown to the suspects at the scene. A search of the box was conducted in their presence, during which seven (7) brick-like parcels, suspected of being cocaine, were discovered.
Both suspects, Shaquille Gordon, the driver of the white Volkswagen motorcar, and Ravindranauth Persaud, the driver of a white Pitbull Minibus bearing registration number BAB 6337, were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquartersalong with the suspected narcotic.
At CANU Headquarters, the suspected narcotic tested positive for cocaine and weighed approximately 8.226 kilogrammes (18.135 lbs).
Investigations are ongoing.
“CANU remains committed to intelligence-led operations to disrupt narcotics trafficking and safeguard communities across Guyana,” the statement detailed.
Only Saturday, the anti-narco agency reported that some 161.09kg of illicit narcotics were discovered during the month of January.
