Miner killed during drunken row at 14 Miles Backdam, Mazaruni River

Police in Regional Division #7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) are investigating the murder of Shawn Abrams, a miner from Charity, Essequibo Coast, which occurred at about 00:45 hrs on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 14 Miles, Issano, Middle Mazaruni River.

The alleged suspect has been identified as a 31-year-old miner from Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

According to police reports, initial investigations revealed that Abrams, three friends, and the alleged suspect were consuming alcohol at a bar in the 14 Miles Backdam area when there was an altercation between Abrams and the suspect.

One of the men intervened and separated the two, during which he observed what appeared to be bloodstains on Abrams’ vest. The suspect reportedly ran from the shop, while Abrams walked a short distance before collapsing.

Detectives subsequently visited and processed the scene, where Abrams’ motionless body was observed on the ground in front of the counter.

The area was canvassed for CCTV cameras and witnesses. No CCTV cameras were found; statements were taken.

Police have conducted checks at several camps in the 14 Miles Backdam area for the suspect, but he has not yet been located. Efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him.
