Despite her supporters including opposition politicians attempting to cast blame on the Guyana Government, it has been revealed that Melissa Atwell-Holder also known as ‘Melly Mel’ was arrested by US authorities for overstaying on her visitor’s visa.

The controversial social media commentator has been granted bond in the sum of US$7,500 by a US judge.

Atwell has been in a US detention facility for some two weeks after she was arrested for visa overstay.

She was arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

She appeared before Judge Mwangi Francis for a hearing on Friday, where she secured the bond.

She will be released from detention once the bond is posted.

Atwell’s lawyer submitted that her client has been married to a US citizen for some two years and her residency documents are being processed.

Her next hearing will be on April 18.

Members of the parliamentary opposition – particularly the Peoples National Congress/A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change – had joined a protest in Georgetown where a group of persons attempted to blame the Guyana Government for Atwell’s arrest in the US.

The Opposition claimed that it is protesting the “likely role” the Guyana Government played in Atwell’s arrest.

Some Opposition members who participated in the protest include Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton as well as Sherod Duncan, Coretta McDonald and Cathy Hughes.
