Yogeendra Sukhdeo of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), who pleaded guilty to killing his 21-year-old business partner Amit Singh in October 2023, has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years of his sentence.
The sentence was handed down today by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court.
Prior to his sentencing, Sukhdeo apologised for his actions and begged Singh’s family for forgiveness.
A post-mortem examination found that Singh died from blunt force trauma to the head, face, and neck.
Investigators said Singh and Sukhdeo were close friends and business partners. It was reported that on October 24, Sukhdeo picked Singh up from his Campbellville, Georgetown home in a black Toyota Allion after reportedly changing the vehicle’s registration plates to avoid detection.
When Singh failed to return home, his family alerted the police. Acting on intelligence, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Sukhdeo, who led them to a house on Middle Road, La Penitence, where Singh’s body was discovered wrapped in a sheet.
Police said Singh had been lured to the property under the false pretense of purchasing raw gold from a group of men. Investigators believe the meeting was part of a planned robbery. During a confrontation at the house, Singh was allegedly beaten to death. Sukhdeo reportedly wrapped the body in a sheet and fled the scene.
After allegedly confessing, Sukhdeo took investigators to his Diamond home, where police recovered $7.7 million.
On June 24, 2026, Sukhdeo entered a guilty plea, bringing his trial to an early conclusion.
