Police in Regional Division #7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) are investigating the murder of Moses Chapelle called “Bizo” (only information given), who was recently shot dead.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 23, 2026, around 21:30 hours at Blackwater Backdam, Cuyuni River.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had returned to Blackwater Landing with another man after visiting a mining operation in the backdam, and the two were later allegedly imbibing in the vicinity of a shop when a loud explosion, suspected to be a gunshot, was heard. The deceased reportedly fell to the ground and was later observed with what appeared to be blood on his back.
With the assistance of persons at the landing, the injured man was transported to the Puruni Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival about 01:37hrs on Friday, April 24, 2026, by a medic on duty. His body was subsequently examined, and a small circular wound was observed in the left lower back area.
Police later visited the scene, where suspected bloodstains were seen on the earth’s surface, from which samples were collected.
A 45-year-old gold miner of Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, was subsequently arrested and placed into custody.
The body is being escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital and will thereafter await a post-mortem examination.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
