Guyanese, Barbadians to travel with ID cards from July

Citizens of Barbados and Guyana will soon be able to travel between the two countries using only their national identification cards under a new bilateral arrangement announced ahead of both nations’ 60th Independence anniversaries. The measure, which takes effect on July 1, 2026, will allow eligible citizens holding valid national ID cards to travel between Barbados and Guyana without the need for a passport.

In a joint announcement issued on Monday, the governments of Barbados and Guyana described the move as a major step towards deeper regional integration and closer people-to-people ties between the two CARICOM nations. The arrangement was approved following the passage of the necessary orders by the cabinets of both countries after consultations involving government officials, CARICOM IMPACS and other regional stakeholders.

Officials said the initiative is expected to make travel easier and more affordable while supporting stronger family connections, increased tourism, cultural exchange, business travel, trade and investment. Prime Minister Mia Mottley described the arrangement as a practical example of Caribbean integration benefiting ordinary citizens. “This initiative represents another significant step forward in regional cooperation, south-south collaboration, and people-centred governance,” Mottley said.

“As our two nations mark 60 years of Independence, it is fitting that we take this step together. This is the kind of practical integration that Caribbean people can feel in their daily lives. It will truly make Caribbean integration a lived reality.”

President of Guyana Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali also welcomed the development, calling it a symbol of the close relationship between the two countries and their shared vision for a more connected Caribbean region. “As Guyana and Barbados celebrate 60 years of Independence, this initiative symbolises not only the enduring friendship between our nations, but also our shared vision for a more connected, accessible, and united Caribbean community,” Ali said.

The two governments said additional details regarding eligibility requirements and implementation procedures will be released ahead of the July 1 start date. (Barbados Today)
