GPL hosts technical workshop to advance renewable energy, power system digitalisation
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) on Friday hosted an exclusive Tailored Energy and Power Technical CSR Workshop at its New Sophia Control Center, bringing together the company’s executive leadership, engineers and technical personnel to explore cutting-edge developments in renewable energy integration, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the digital transformation of the electricity sector.
Opening the workshop, GPL’s Head of the Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, underscored the importance of continuous learning and embracing new technologies as Guyana’s energy landscape rapidly evolves.

“As Guyana continues its unprecedented development, GPL must remain at the forefront of innovation. Workshops like these provide our engineers and technical teams with direct exposure to world-class expertise and emerging technologies that will strengthen our electricity network, improve reliability and position GPL to meet the country’s growing energy demands. Investing in our people is just as important as investing in our infrastructure,” Nandlall said.
The one-day workshop, facilitated by international experts from Huawei Digital Power, forms part of GPL’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the technical capacity of its workforce while supporting the utility’s long-term modernisation agenda.
The morning session focused on the implementation of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), highlighting global energy trends, grid-forming technologies, international case studies and opportunities for future collaboration. Presentations were delivered by Huawei Digital Power experts Diomedes Quijano and Wang Xianbao.

The afternoon session shifted attention to the digitalisation of electric power systems, covering global industry trends, intelligent substations, power ICT networks, cybersecurity, anti-ransomware strategies for utilities and discussions on GPL’s digital transformation roadmap. The session was led by Fabio Eduardo Giraldo Cardona and Juan Luis del Valle.
GPL remains committed to leveraging international partnerships, modern technologies and continuous professional development to deliver a smarter, more resilient and sustainable electricity network for the people of Guyana.
