Govt, Shipping Association talk strengthening sector’s efficiency

The Shipping Association of Guyana (SAG), led by its Chairman, Dr. Komal Singh, along with representatives of shipping lines operating in Guyana, met with Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Honourable Dr. Ashni K. Singh, to discuss a broad range of issues and challenges facing the shipping industry and explore how Government and industry can collaborate to address them, with a view to improving port efficiency and strengthening the overall competitiveness of Guyana’s shipping sector.

The Association acknowledged Guyana’s continued economic expansion and the significant increase in commercial activity and imports accompanying this growth. SAG noted that the ongoing transformation of the economy presents both opportunities and new demands for the shipping and logistics sector, making sustained collaboration between Government and industry increasingly important.

During the engagement, SAG highlighted several operational matters affecting the industry and emphasized the importance of continuously improving the systems and processes that support the movement of cargo through Guyana’s ports. The Association noted that stronger coordination, streamlined processes and greater responsiveness across the sector will be essential as trade volumes and economic activity continue to expand.

Dr. Komal Singh welcomed the engagement, stating:

“This engagement is timely, as Guyana’s economy is experiencing significant growth, which is having a direct and positive impact on the shipping industry. Our objective is to work collaboratively with Government to ensure that Guyana’s shipping and trade systems continue to keep pace with the country’s rapid economic growth. A strong and efficient shipping sector is critical to supporting trade, reducing delays and ensuring that Guyana’s development is supported by an increasingly efficient logistics network.”

Minister Singh acknowledged the critical role of the shipping industry in facilitating Guyana’s trade and supporting the country’s economic development. He welcomed the constructive engagement with SAG and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to working with the industry to address challenges and strengthen the overall environment in which the sector operates.

Minister Singh stated:

“The Government recognizes the critical role of the shipping industry in facilitating trade and supporting Guyana’s continued economic expansion. We remain committed to working collaboratively with the sector to improve efficiency and ensure that our systems continue to respond to the needs of a rapidly growing economy.”

The Shipping Association of Guyana expressed its appreciation to Minister Singh for the engagement and reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with Government and other stakeholders to strengthen Guyana’s shipping, logistics and trade environment.
