Govt advancing hinterland airstrip upgrades to improve connectivity, lower travel costs

The government is moving ahead with a major expansion of its hinterland transportation network, with more than 30 airstrips set to go to tender as part of an ongoing programme to modernise aviation infrastructure and improve access to remote communities.

Speaking at the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference on Tuesday, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said engineers have completed assessments of over 30 airstrips, paving the way for the next phase of upgrades under the government’s continued investment in hinterland connectivity.

Backed by approximately $4 billion in Budget 2026, the programme will see key airstrips upgraded from laterite to concrete surfaces, improving safety, reliability and year-round accessibility. The Vice President said the government is currently finalising priority locations, including Mabaruma, Port Kaituma and other hinterland communities.

Dr Jagdeo said the initiative is a continuation of the government’s long-term programme to strengthen Guyana’s transportation network, noting that improved air connectivity will have a significant impact on hinterland communities by reducing travel costs, expanding access to healthcare and education, supporting business activity and creating new opportunities for tourism and economic development.

He added that Regions Seven and Eight are expected to be among the priority areas, as improved aviation infrastructure will help lower the cost of living while opening greater economic opportunities for residents.
