A quantity of cannabis intended for the Mazaruni Prison was intercepted in several packs of snacks on Tuesday at the Bartica Police Station. Police stated that at about 09:40h on the day in question, a 34-year-old nurse attached to the Bartica Regional Hospital turned up at the Bartica Police Station and reported that a male, whose name and address are presently unknown, had given her a parcel containing several packs of snacks to be taken to the Mazaruni Prison.

The woman reportedly became suspicious after detecting a strong scent suspected to be narcotics emanating from the parcel, and as such, took it to the police station. During an inspection of the parcel in her presence, some 18 packs of assorted snacks were found, three of which contained cannabis wrapped in transparent plastic.

In addition, tobacco leaves and one pack of mints were also found. The suspected cannabis was weighed and amounted to 29.8 grams. In light of this development, checks were made to locate the male who reportedly gave her the parcel, but without success. An investigation is underway.
